I complain a lot (here, and also to myself) about how little I enjoy riding my bike now that it's become something I "train" on. I go on about wanting to look at the trees and the flowers, feel the wind on my face, etc. I have grown to actively dislike threshold intervals, heart rate zones, any sort of "drill."
So during the bike portion of Saturday's Doylestown Duathlon (the first du I've ever willingly signed up for) perhaps it was ironic that I found myself appreciating a stand of daffodils on the side of the road, their papery yellow petals facing traffic, almost spectator-like, and rippling in the wind.
It wasn't a good ride. I'd say probably my worst in a race. My handlebars came loose when I hit a deep road seam three minutes in and I was forced to ride in an exceptionally forward position, which somehow jacked my left hip flexor and glute. I simply could not get any power from that leg. And did I mention there was a headwind for the entire 30K loop?
So at the daffodil gallery I decided I might as well take this opportunity to enjoy the flowers.
I'm glad I did because they lifted my spirits despite the relentless wind and my increasing discomfort.
The good news: I ran two strong 5Ks and didn't fade exorbitantly.
And then yesterday, I enjoyed nearly two hours in the saddle along Pennsylvania farm-country roads. Mostly into the wind, with the occasional draft from a horse-drawn buggy, and an adrenalin-shot tailwind on the way back.
Lots of fields, cows, barns, and (yes) flowers to enjoy.
More, please.

Might As Well Enjoy the Flowers

I love looking at the flowers when I ride but I don't see very many in my area of the country. However, I have been know to be amused by the prarie dogs!
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I don't do well on exercise equipment is because of the lack of visual input. When I run or bike I love looking around and enjoying nature.
ReplyDeleteNaturally after yesterday I began to wonder if anyone else really *loves* bike riding. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who questions it. I do enjoy a nice, leisurely ride with great scenery. (minus dogs & cars, of course). Thanks for your note today :)
ReplyDeleteIf I may....Do you do those "drills" alone, Leah? I really love riding my bike. Love it. Love it. It's one of my biggest pleasures, even on days that it's training. But I think for me it's because I don't follow the intervals completely to the letter. And I always do workouts with like minded friends. So there's a lot of laughter and checking out old barns and lawn art along the way. I hate to see anyone not enjoying the ride...
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I noticed this phenomenom when I was training by myself a lot last year. Sometimes it's unavoidable to train alone but try and mix it up with friends in bunch and group rides. It makes a huge difference to the enjoyment factor. And - hey - what's the point in doing something that's not fun, right?
ReplyDeleteThis is why I have such a hard time riding my bike for time in Germany. I get so sidetracked with the flowers and little villages. They are gorgeous! Sometimes, it is just good to unplug everything, and just go out there and ride!
ReplyDeletewow, loose handlebars doesn't sound fun. i think i would enjoy the bike more if i lived somewhere where i could do an easy, FLAT ride every now and then.
ReplyDeleteso sick of the %$# wind!
