Marathon Minded

It's officially 16 weeks until the ING New York City Marathon!

And this was the first weekend in a while that I've had a long run on the training plan. I wasn't looking forward to it. A couple of weeks ago I developed some kind of serious discomfort/numbness in my left foot. During the race last weekend, my foot felt like a stump. And during my shorter runs this week, it felt like it was on fire. In a bad way. I couldn't imagine a long run.

But I set out and found myself thinking about the marathon and how excited I am to be doing it. I can't wait to feel the energy of the crowds and travel through all the boroughs of NYC, with friends and family cheering me on. Every time I think about the marathon, I can literally feel the excitement. It's been a while since I've felt that way about a race/event, so let's please hope I make it to the starting line in one piece.

Anyway, today's run consisted of three loops. At the end of the first my legs felt great. Hills I have struggled up in the past flew under my feet. I felt so fantastic that I negative split the second loop. Then I sucked down a Double Latte Power Gel and the last loop just zoomed by.

Running last weekend at the Philadelphia Women's Tri-Turned-Du.

I came home, stretched well, then sat in an ice bath (ahhh!) where I contemplated the close of a satisfying training week that included a great open water swim and two fun bike rides with friends topped off by today's successful long run.

I'll probably do one or two more tris this summer, one open water swim race, and possibly the bike leg of a relay. But other than that, I'll be marathon minded until November 1.

In the meantime, I'll be scheduling more bike rides with friends, focusing on feeling good on my long runs, and stocking the freezer with bags of ice.

From what I read in the few sections of the Race Like No Other NYC is a fun race to do. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Good to hear that you are back to running strong. Good luck in training and keep us posted on your progress.

Any B/C races on your schedule for the remaining few weeks before NYC? Are you going to be down at Lake Nockamixon during Steelman? I plan to come down although I do not race that weekend.

I've had the same fire/numbness in my foot - morton's nueroma. Your local running store should carry little pads that you can put in your shoes to spread the bones in your foot out so it doesn't pinch the nerve(I promise it doesn't hurt like it sounds). Also I've found that not lacing the bottom loop of my shoes(the one closest to your toes), and loosening the rest of the loops has helped as well. If it gets numb, the worst thing you can do is slow down to a walk. Numb is better than fire.

Good luck with your training!
