Today's long run was 2:15 and the last long one before the Lehigh Valley Half Marathon on May 3.
Wait, what?! That is just two weeks away. Uh-oh. I'm in denial.
I feel slow and unfocused. And sore. Really, really sore. Everything hurts. I can't imagine doing this race and I really wish I were a faster runner. I'm secretly hoping that when I pick up my race packet they'll tell me I never registered!
Oh, and I wish my tank top hadn't ridden up the entire 135 minutes of today's run revealing a strip of pasty white belly flab poking out over the waist of my shorts. Grr. Got home and practiced running in front of a mirror to make sure it didn't actually bob up and down. (Here's where years of high school body image issues have come back to haunt me. You think you're over this stuff and then---bam!)
After the run I tried to take an ice bath. But, hey, turns out cold water will only come out of the tap when it's set to a trickle. Learned this after dumping ice in bath and hearing the telltale cracking as it melted in the lukewarm water. Another rookie mistake. I make every single one; why not add this to the list?
Good news though, I found out last week that I've been invited to join the Asics Editor Run Team to train for the ING New York City Marathon! I am very excited about this, though now that it's real, the prospect of actually doing the marathon is a little scary. Run through all five boroughs? All those miles? It's going to be a long slog.
Hopefully by then I'll have the ice bath recipe figured out.

13 of you had something to say:
I had a riding-up shirt on a long run a couple weeks ago - it is DISTINCTLY bad for the morale!
Re: fall marathon: EXCITING! Good luck in the Lehigh Valley race, too...
i had that belly experience at the gym in class in front of lots of mirrors while jumping rope in a shirt that used to not ride up pre-baby. i finally tucked in the front of it before any up and down motions. geeky, but definitely the better option.
I've been feeling slightly like a stuffed sausage in my cycling jerseys and lycra. You feel strong, you still perform, but one glance in the mirror and suddenly it's not worth going out the door.
Great stuff about the Lehigh half marathon...looking forward to reading about it...AND the NYC marathon!

Leah, we've talked about this before.... go back a year! Look at how amazingly far you've come. You're doing awesome-you've been running strong, running consistently, not giving in to the mental demons.... be proud of yourself!!
As for the ice bath... purely having the thought of sitting in one shows serious strength and determination. :) I'm happy with a slightly cool shower.
Go for it in 2 weeks... you're going to surprise yourself!
I find that if I'm not ready for a 1/2 marathon (which is usually 75% of the time), I make sure I have a really, really good play list to get my through it. Turn up your tunes, put your head down, and just get to the finish.
a little taper, a better shirt and you'll be golden. seriously. and yay for NYC. one of the most entertaining races ever. you'll never be bored.
thanks for solving my magazine mystery ;) and i can totally relate to the shirt -- why oh why do they do that? and why oh why do we care so much? I swear I've lost in sum a good minute or two of racing time tugging down my tops on the some runs -- the joys of being female! That's great about the NYC Marathon - asics is one of my clients - you will have a lot of fun with them!!
Oooh I am jealous, I have always wanted to do NYC. That is so awesome that you get to do it and train with people too.
So funny about the body image stuff. I think it's so ingrained in us that we'll likely still think about it when we're 80.
Congrats on your long run-sounds like you're ready!
You are SO lucky!!!! New York City Mara? Oh, I envy you. You have the most awesome job!! Seriously.
Btw, didn't you find the ice bath relaxing?
Hey, very cool meeting you today! Just wanted to ask if you're OK with me posting your picture. I imagine so, but thought I'd ask. Thanks!
Bob
leah, glad you're back at it. sounds like you had a great run, except for the tank top issue. that's why i buy them long!!! :)
Hi Leah, if you are ever in need of a quick ice bath but no tub or no cold water? That's what I do: I always have a little plastic water bottle in the freezer. After a race or hard training ride I rub my legs down with the frozen bottle for at least ten minutes till they feel really cold and then have a warm shower.
Sure on the picture though it may frighten small children. Sorry we had to leave so fast. It was all part of the bargaining that enabled me to get there at all!
